PHIXER for Game Audio: interactive mix mono fold, middleware stems, and mobile fold
Interactive music beds and SFX layers sound huge in the studio. On a platform downmix, phone speaker, Bluetooth earbud, or console TV fold, bass thins, impacts hollow, and beds lose weight under dialogue. Middleware stems and mobile builds can cancel the same way. That is fold physics and multi-layer phase, not a broken limiter. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a loudness tool, and it does not replace a true mono / mobile listen.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a loudness processor, not a middleware bus replace, and not a substitute for polarity, timing, or a real mono/mobile check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on stereo beds, FX prints, or stem stacks you must keep stereo.
Three game audio failure modes this page covers
- Interactive mix mono fold. Stereo music beds, ambience layers, and hard L/R SFX hollow when the platform sums or downmixes. Full checklist: Game audio / interactive mix mono fold.
- Middleware stems. Printed music / SFX / dialogue stems cancel on the build fold or QA check even when the session mix sounded fine. Related: Stem bus / stem delivery phase and film/TV delivery habits on PHIXER for Film / TV.
- Mobile fold. Phone speakers, Bluetooth buds, and thin TV paths expose anti-correlated low-mids that headphones hid. Confirm on a real phone path before ship.
Fast interactive / mobile audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R (or your platform / middleware mono monitor path). Listen under dialogue and alone.
- A/B music bed and SFX with dialogue muted vs open. Note what disappears: chest, impact body, vocal mid.
- On dual-path or layered assets (stereo bed + layer, dual take, printed stem stack): mute one path briefly. Note which path thins the fold.
- Confirm on a phone speaker or Bluetooth-like mono path, then again on the middleware stems / build, not only the session master.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono / platform listen
Platform downmix path or a hard L+R sum. Full habit: mono check workflow and game audio mono fold.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Interfaces, field recorders, and some DSP invert. Flip Ø when body returns immediately. Guide: when not to use PHIXER (polarity first).
3. Timing / align before spectral tools
Layered beds and dual-path SFX need sample-accurate alignment first. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for a few ms of delay.
4. Prefer mono-safe delivery for beds and stems
Keep critical low-mid energy correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: stem delivery and Film / TV LoRo / stems habits.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a printed stereo music bed, FX stem, or interactive layer must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Game audio path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive mix / platform fold | Fine in suite, thin on build | True mono listen; mono-safe bed |
| Music bed / ambience layer | Boom / bed hollow under VO | Mute fighting width; polarity |
| Middleware stems (DX / MX / FX) | Session OK, stems hollow | Audition stems alone; see stems guide |
| Layered SFX / dual-path prop | Body thins when both open | Timing; mute weaker path |
| Mobile / phone / Bluetooth | Huge in nearfields, gone on phone | Phone speaker check before ship |
| Console TV / hotel TV fold | Stereo image collapses | TV-like mono path; see also Film / TV |
When free PHIXER belongs in a game audio toolkit
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (music bed, FX print, stem stack), not a mono boom you fake-widened.
- Polarity, timing, and mono / mobile listen are cleaned up, but fold still hollows a band of the spectrum.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer body without wrecking the image.
- You are building a mono / mobile habit on the stems, not using PHIXER to paper over three open layers.
- Budget is zero: free download on Gumroad (Win/Mac/Linux · VST3/CLAP/AU).
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Music bed thins on platform fold | Mute width; polarity | Anti-correlated low-mid bed |
| Layered SFX cancels mid | Align; one hero layer | Timing before spectral tools |
| Session OK, middleware stems hollow | Audition stem bus alone | Printed stem ≠ session master |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Dialogue alone is dull | Gain / EQ / take choice | Not an L/R repair job |
| Phone / mobile fold hollows chest | Phone check; mono-safe bed | Mobile path exposes fold |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the middleware stems or a phone speaker yet.
- The fix is obviously one hero layer, polarity, or quieter stereo width under VO.
- You want PHIXER to make the mix louder, wider, or to replace middleware spatialization. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is level or tone.
- Full list: when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Platform / mono listen → one hero layer → polarity if a path flips → align layered beds / dual-path SFX → mute fighting stereo width under VO → phone or Bluetooth check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on beds or stems → confirm again on the middleware stems / build.
